Tel Aviv, August 19 -Israel’s decision to assign transgender women as prison guards for security prisoners has triggered an ideological fracture among Western activists, who find themselves unable to reconcile their simultaneous commitments to gender ideology and anti-Israel activism.
The Ministry of Defense and IDF confirmed this week that several units of transgender personnel have been posted to detention facilities holding captured terrorists and operatives, whether from Palestinian “resistance” factions or Hezbollah in Lebanon. Military spokesmen described the move as routine personnel assignment based on qualifications and operational needs. Progressive reaction, however, has been anything but routine.
Gender-focused activists hesitate to hail the deployment as a historic victory for inclusion, for fear of betraying their anti-Israel allies. “Trans women are women, and they have every right to serve in any capacity, including guarding the enemies of progress,” a source within the U.S.-based Trans Rights Defense Network stated, speaking on condition of anonymity. “This is affirmation in action. But we know how impossible it is to divorce trans rights activism from Palestine activism. For so long, we’ve subjugated the former to the latter.”
Accordingly, anti-Zionist progressives denounced the assignment as an unacceptable expansion of “settler-colonial violence.” “Putting trans people in positions of power over Palestinian prisoners is pinkwashing of the highest order,” argued a joint letter from several campus chapters of Students for Justice in Palestine and allied queer collectives. “No amount of gender affirmation can sanitize occupation.” The resulting online and campus debates have grown increasingly bitter, with each faction accusing the other of betrayal. Missing from most of the arguments is any consistent standard regarding actual oppression.
Progressives have long maintained comfortable relationships with regimes that systematically suppress women, gays, and dissenters. Iran executes homosexuals and forces women under the hijab. Qatar criminalizes same-sex relations while hosting Western universities and World Cup events that progressives celebrate. The Palestinian Authority and Hamas enforce conservative social codes that leave little room for gender nonconformity, yet both continue to receive rhetorical and sometimes material support from the same activist networks now debating the IDF’s staffing choices.
Because of this track record, allegations of mistreatment by the new transgender guards — whether accurate, exaggerated, or fabricated — carry little weight as a disqualifying factor. Progressives have repeatedly demonstrated that documented abuses by preferred actors do not automatically forfeit legitimacy. The same voices that shrug at hangings in Havana or honor killings in Gaza suddenly discover moral clarity only when the Israeli military is involved.
Analysts remain divided over whether this potential split will sever LGBTQ+ activism from the pro-Palestine movement, given the movement’s success to date in subsuming every other progressive program into the Palestinian Omnicause.
