Boston, September 17 - Defenders of a woman who murdered her three small children acknowledged today they face a formidable obstacle to recruiting a critical mass of the academia, pundit, and journalism classes to their cause, in the form of the accused having an ethnicity that does not, alas, lend itself to automatic blamelessness under progressive ideology.
Karen Virago, president of Mothers for Exculpatory Diagnoses and Equity in Accountability (MEDEA), admitted in an interview that her organization’s activism on behalf of Lindsay Clancy might in the end fail to achieve its goal of, ideally, exonerating Ms. Clancy, but more realistically, helping the defendant avoid any legal consequences for strangling her children one by one. The concern, explained Ms. Virago, stems from the inescapable fact that, despite all the awareness the MEDEA campaigns have generated about post-partum mental health issues, Clancy is simply not Palestinian, and therefore does not enjoy blanket immunity and acceptance in progressive circles for perpetrating the most heinous atrocities.
“One of our coalition partners suggested Lindsay convert to Islam,” recalled Virago. “I don’t know whether Lindsay would listen to such advice, but I don’t think it’s likely. Because it could work. But she wouldn’t even have to formally declare the Shahada - a different catechism, ‘Free Palestine!’ might be enough to sway enough of the right people.”
MEDEA gas spent weeks agitating for a jury to acquit Clancy - but one juror reportedly refused to bow to the other eleven in favor of acquittal; he insisted that the panel must reckon with only the facts of the case: the defense admits Clancy killed the children. Other jurors have spoken of seeing the Clancy case not as the trial of one woman who perpetrated infanticide, but as an opportunity to engage in mental health activism.
“That use of something manifestly evil, dressed up as good an noble actually, is a perfect encapsulation of the Palestine cause,” lamented Virago. “The massacres, rapes, and kidnappings of October 7, not to mention the countless terrorist attacks Jews and Israel for more than a century, would be impossible to view as okay if the cast of characters differed. We need to siphon away some of that, the tendency to assign some justification to the worst depredations as soon as Palestinians engage in them, and get more people to think of Lindsay that way. But that seems an uphill battle at best.”
Analysts agreed. “Clancy is a white woman,” noted Joy Behar. “The cause poses serious challenges. Without the immunity that being Palestinian provides, all this case does is highlight that some feminist activism has become less about helping women rise to responsibility and power, and more about removing from them all accountability. Perhaps one day that drive will succeed, and, like Palestinians, women will no longer be required to do anything for themselves, while the world still sees them entitled to hundreds of billions of “aid” in the form of other people’s money. Progress.”
