Shoham, October 15 - A resident of this town twenty minutes outside Tel Aviv continued his offensive disregard for pro-Palestinian sensibilities today by not adhering to the standards of exploitative evil that the progressive world expects of him, observers report.
The Israeli, a father of three who works as a mechanical engineer, launched into Thursday’s display of insulting nonconformance with activist caricature by neglecting, nay, refusing, to live his life in conscious relationship to Palestinian suffering, neither by aiming to perpetrate it, nor by merely living well with the specific intention of enjoying what most Palestinians cannot. He rose at a normal hour, prepared breakfast for his children, and drove to work without once pausing to reflect on the strategic value of settlers or even the slightest thought in favor of harassing Palestinian villagers.
His routine proceeded through the morning to involve professional, collegial, logistical, and technical pursuits, with occasional breaks to read and respond to chat messages from his wife and in one case, his brother. None of the chats explicitly or implicitly glorified, or even mentioned, depriving Palestinians of civil rights, denying the Nakba, or calling Arabs subhuman. Similarly, none of the professional, collegial, logistical, or technical activities bore any apparent relation to the conflict with the Palestinians, concerning as they did the design of farm equipment components for an overseas client.
Experts differ on the level of intentionality behind the man’s flagrant refusal to live down to activists’ stereotypes. “The absence of any ethnic-cleansing-related activity or rhetoric is suspicious,” argued Francesca Albanese, an expert on Zionist supremacism. “It can only be contrived, in this case to provoke people of conscience.”
Others contend that the complete lack of anti-Palestinian atmosphere surrounding the man’s everyday life can only result from a pernicious, decades-long effort to erase the Palestinian condition from awareness. “Everyone knows the Palestinian cause is the only real one that matters,” observed Cenk Uygur. “Every thinking and feeling person reflexively feels the pain of Palestinians, at least if we can paint Israel as the cause. If Lebanon, Kuwait, or some other nation mistreats Palestinians, that only matters if it an be ultimately blamed on Israel. The point is, if this man gives not a thought to shooting Palestinian journalists or medical personnel, that represents an even more sinister attitude - as if Palestinians don’t even matter. And Palestinians not mattering is perhaps the most offensive, evil thought of all.”
