New York, August 31 - People keep misunderstanding my position. I am not indifferent to Jewish deaths. I am just highly selective about which Jewish deaths I am expected to treat as unacceptable.

The thesis is simple: beginning with the progressive axiom that Israel makes antisemitism worse - since everyone knows there was barely any antisemitism until Israel came along - we need to accept the elimination of the seven million Jews in Israel as the price for achieving the global Jewish safety that will inevitably result from Israel not being around anymore to generate all that antisemitism.

I am not so naive as to think anti-Jewish phenomena will disappear once Israel does. But Diaspora Jews can be protected with better policing, better speech codes, better lighting on campus - and above all, solidarity with their non-Jewish neighbors, which has a proven record of keeping Jews alive and protected everywhere except under Christianity or Islam for the last two thousand years.

Of course that protection is contingent on those Jews renouncing Zionism or any ambitions to peoplehood or sovereignty.

If we take away their sovereignty in the once place they consider their historic homeland and instead encourage them to be rootless, we can also undermine the antisemitic canard that Jews are rootless cosmopolitans with no loyalty to their host societies.

Yes, the transition will be ugly. Transitions involving the dismantling of a state usually are. I am asked whether I have considered the children in Sderot, the elderly in Netanya, the whole crowded coastal strip that will not be allowed to remain what it is. I have considered them. I have classified them as the cost center of a theory I already like. If the theory requires that they cease to exist as a sovereign public, then their deaths are not a refutation. They are implementation.

Such dry language. No wonder we find so much common cause with Communists.

The remaining Jews, scattered again, will be available for the older arrangement: conditional tolerance, and a curriculum that explains that whatever happens next is still, somehow, about settlements, or at least that the Jews somehow had it coming. They will be safer in the sense that they will no longer be able to embarrass us by surviving on their own terms, or possibly at all.

You know, actually, come to think of it, for the noble sake of Jewish safety, I am also willing to accept no small number of dead Jews outside Israel, too.
