Dongguan, September 7 – A coalition of Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions activists called today for an industrial plant in this manufacturing hub to remove Israeli-made components from its production line, while leaving unchallenged the facility’s documented use of underage workers.
The demand followed an inventory review by the International Committee for Ethical Sourcing Except When It Comes to Jews, which identified several possible Israeli sensors, control modules, and precision fittings in machinery used at the Harmony Prosperity Electronics compound. The same review confirmed that children as young as thirteen work twelve-hour shifts assembling consumer goods for export. Committee organizers said the second finding, while regrettable to western sensibilities, stems from local cultural factors no westerner has authority to judge, and as such did not alter their campaign priorities.
“No product assembled here should be stained by apartheid technology,” said campaign coordinator Brynleigh Ostrow, speaking outside the factory gate as a shift of adolescent workers filed past. “We cannot in good conscience allow Zionist parts to remain in a supply chain that already carries so many other ethical complications. Certainly not if it accustoms children working here to accept it as normal.”
Factory director Wei Jianmin said he was prepared to discuss labor practices, overtime, or school-age hiring with anyone who asked. No one from the coalition had. “They sent a spreadsheet of serial numbers and a list of Israeli vendors,” Wei said. “They did not ask about ages, dormitories, or whether the night shift still includes fourteen-year-olds. I offered to walk them through the floor. They asked instead whether a motion sensor on Line 4 was made in Haifa.”
It was. Several other components originated with Israeli firms that supply industrial automation worldwide. Activists described those parts as uniquely contaminating. Forced labor, student-worker programs, and recruitment of minors from inland provinces were characterized as “local conditions” and “not the mandate of this action.”
A statement from the coalition pledged pickets, university resolutions, and pressure on Western retailers until the Israeli parts are swapped for alternatives of unspecified origin. The statement did not propose a timeline for ending child labor, nor did it call on Chinese authorities to enforce existing age restrictions. Organizers said such matters risked “diluting the humanitarian focus.”
An email from Committee headquarters contained specific instructions to its activists not to inquire about, not to seek out, and not to mention anything related to Beijing’s treatment of the Muslim Uighur minority.
